Newaygo Michigan is located in southern Newaygo County on the Muskegon River. Newaygo’s earliest recorded history goes back to the mid 1700’s when French explorers and trappers traveled up the Muskegon River. Newaygo County was named after the Chippewa Indian Chief (Naw-wa-goo). Settlement of the area began in 1836. Newaygo grew during the lumber boom because of its prime location on the Muskegon River, a major route for timber. Today Newaygo remains as a charming quaint town with big character. The Muskegon River continues to be the main attraction for summer vacationers and fishermen. The river is nearly the best source for steelhead in the spring and salmon in the fall. This is also a popular area for hunters, camper and RV's. Half of Newaygo County resides in the Manistee National Forest.
